[00:00:00] Foreign. [00:00:10] Pastor Chuck Allen here. And it's a beautiful Thursday. [00:00:14] It is springtime and what a great time of the year. We're going to talk about Scripture again today. All week, we've been talking about how to better understand and read the Bible. And today I. I want to talk specifically and explore a crucial key to reading the Bible. Well, context. And how context, when we pay attention to it, actually grows our compassion. [00:00:43] Every verse you read has an address. [00:00:47] It lives in a neighborhood, a chapter, a book, a historical moment, a culture. When we pull a verse out of its neighborhood, we can make it say almost anything. You've probably heard verses used as weapons before, thrown like stones instead of offered like bread. [00:01:07] When Scripture is ripped out of context, it easily becomes a tool of judgment instead of a channel of grace. But when we slow down and we ask what's really going on here? Who's talking, who's listening, and. And what's happening in this moment? Then the Bible begins to open up in new ways. Take the story of the Good Samaritan. If you only read the parable with zero context, we might think it's just a nice lesson about being kind. [00:01:37] But when you realize that Jews and Samaritans despised each other culturally and religiously, you start to see how radical Jesus's story really is. [00:01:48] He's not just saying, hey, be nice. [00:01:51] He crosses a boundary line that people thought could not be crossed. Or you think of the woman at the well in John, chapter four. Without context, it's just a story about a woman getting water and talking to Jesus. But when you understand she's drawing water at the hottest time of the day, likely because she's avoiding the judgmental stairs of her community. [00:02:13] But the whole conversation takes on layers of grace and tenderness. [00:02:18] Jesus meets her in her shame and offers living water. [00:02:24] Context opens our eyes to the heart of God. When you read Scripture and pay attention to the flow of the story, the movement of the chapter, and the emotions of the people, you begin to feel what's happening, not just analyze it. And here's where compassion comes in. When you see who. Who these people really are, broken and complex, misunderstood, you can't help but see yourself in them. You begin to realize the Bible isn't about those people back then. It's about my fears, my failures, my encounters with grace. [00:03:04] So how do you read with context, practically? Well, try these four things. One, before zooming in on a single verse, read the whole paragraph or chapter. [00:03:16] Get the full scene, and then ask who's talking, who's being spoken to, what's the problem or tension in the story, and then ask, how would this have sounded to the original audience? Were they scared? Were they angry? Were they confused? Were they hopeful? [00:03:37] And then finally, how does this move me toward compassion for myself and for others? [00:03:45] When we read scripture this way, we're less likely to weaponize the verses. We stop saying, this verse proves I'm right, and we start saying, this story shows me how to love. [00:03:57] You know, the Bible is a library of books, a library of books written across centuries in different styles and situations. [00:04:07] That is part of its beautiful power. It shows us God at work in real history, with real people, in real messes. And the more we see that, the more gracious we become with the people and real messes right in front of us. [00:04:25] So as you read this week, let context lead you into compassion. Let the stories of Scripture soften your judgments and widen your heart. Because if we're reading the Bible correctly, we should become more like Jesus. More patient, more kind, more honest, more loving. [00:04:47] Thanks so much for joining me on today's weekday podcast and our final episode in this series. Tomorrow we'll talk about what it means to let the word breathe through us so we're not just reading the Bible, but actually living it. [00:05:01] I'm Chuck Allen. God bless you, friends. Thanks so much for joining me on today's weekday podcast.
