[00:00:10] Welcome back to the weekday podcast. It's been a joy to be with you all week long. If there's anything I can join you in praying for, drop me a note@bobby sugarhillchurch.com I'd be honored to lift that up. Well, today on the episode, I want to talk about the word that's in Matthew 5:16 that I want to zoom into today, because I think it's one of the most quietly powerful words in the whole passage of Matthew 5.
[00:00:31] Jesus says this in verse 16. He says, Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and they glorify your Father who is in heaven. The word I want to focus on is that word let. It's doing a lot in that sentence. It's doing everything in that sentence. He doesn't say force your light to shine. He doesn't say manufacture brightness through your own willpower. He doesn't say, perform your way into impact. He says, let it, release it, stop blocking it.
[00:00:58] Now, the Greek word behind this carries the idea of something blazing up for something that comes out with intensity when what's been covering it is finally removed. It's not a spark that you generate. It's a fire that's been there all along, waiting to get out. And here's what that means practically. The goal for us as believers is not more effort. The goal is actually less obstruction. I think a lot of us have been treating our faith like performance, like if we just try harder, show up more, do more, then we'll finally be producing enough light that matters. But that's not what Jesus is describing. He's describing something that's already in you, something that was placed there when you were transferred into the kingdom. And he's just asking you to stop getting in the way of it. Now there's something else going on in the verse. Jesus says, the goal of your light shining isn't so that people see how great you are. It's so that they see your good works. And then he says, glorify your Father who's in heaven. The light, in other words, doesn't point to you, it points past you. It points to Him.
[00:01:59] And honestly, that's a relief. Because if the light had to originate with you, with your personality, your charisma, your spiritual resume, then only certain people would qualify. But if the light is his being released through you, then every single person who's been relocated into the kingdom has something to offer, not because of who you are, but because of whose you are. So here's the practical move for you today. Think about one person in your life who's in a dark place.
[00:02:26] Not a project to fix, just a person. A co worker, a neighbor, a family member, a friend. Somebody you see regularly who's carrying something heavy. You don't need a perfect speech. You don't need a ministry degree. You just need to show up and let God put in you and allow it to do what it was designed to do. Maybe it's a kind word. Maybe it's a real question. Maybe it's a moment of genuine presence with them. Let the light do what the light does. Stop overthinking it. Stop waiting until you feel ready. You already have everything you need. The only question is whether you're going to let it out. Remember, the goal is not more effort, it's less obstruction. Let the light out. Have a great day. We'll see you back here tomorrow.
