[00:00:09] Well, hey, friends, welcome back to another edition of the weekday podcast. Yesterday, I asked you to think about the name that you've been carrying. Something that somebody gave you that never quite went away. And today what I want to do is I want to show you where those names come from. Because once you see the pattern, you're going to start recognizing it everywhere you look. Now, in Daniel's story, Babylon doesn't just rename him randomly. In fact, every new name is calculated. Every swap is designed to communicate something specific. Daniel's name in Hebrew means God is my judge. It's a declaration of identity. It has God woven into it. So what does Babylon do? They rename him Belshazzar, which means may a Babylonian little G God protect his life. In other words, they reached into his name and they pulled out the God of Israel and they replaced it with one of their own false God. And they did it to all four of them. Hananiah's name meant God has been gracious. And it became Shadrach, meaning I am fearful of God. They took the warmth out of it and they replaced it with dread or Mishael. Who can compare to my God? No one. It became Meshech, meaning I am despised and I'm humiliated. That shift from confidence to shame. Azariah, God has helped, becomes Abednego, servant of Babylonian, false God. Every single time. Wherever they saw God in these young men's names, they stripped it out of them. They replaced it with something similar, something darker, something false. And here's what I want you to hear from Daniel 1, verse 7. Then the commander of the officials assigned new names to them. They were assigned. They were not chosen. They were not negotiated, just handed out by someone with authority and an agenda. And here's why this is so relevant for your life right now. Babylon is. It still works the same way. The culture around you has got a specific idea about who you're supposed to be, what success is supposed to look like, what your body is supposed to look like, how far along you should be by now, how much you should have accomplished, how your marriage should look, how your kids should turn out. Nobody elected these standards. Nobody handed you a rule book. They're just. They're just there and they have strong opinions about you. And they hand out names the way that Nebuchadnezzar did. Not through cruelty, usually. More often through opportunity. The promotion that starts to define you, the achievement that becomes your whole identity. The comparison that you can't stop making, the expectation you've been running from or chasing for years. The name comes wrapped in something that looks like it matters. That's what made Babylon so effective. Daniel wasn't being mistreated. He was being given the best food, the best education, the best career track and the most powerful nation on the earth. The names that came with real perks.
[00:02:49] And that's still how it works. But here's the question I want you to sit with today. Which names in your life came wrapped in something that looked like a gift? Which voices had the most access to your identity? And did they earn that access or did it just happen? Now, you don't have to answer this out loud, but I want you to give it some thought today. Because the first step towards living free, it isn't rejecting every label. It's knowing which ones were assigned to you and which ones. Which ones are actually true. Because Babylon, it doesn't rename you through cruelty. It renames you through opportunity. Have a great day.
