[00:00:12] Well, hey, friends. Yesterday on the weekday podcast, we met Daniel, who is a teenager. He's far from home. He's standing in front of a decision that could have gone either way. And today on the podcast, I want to slow down and I want to look at one phrase in his story, because I think this one phrase changes how we think about resolve all together. Now, if you missed it, here's the verse. Daniel, chapter one, verse eight says. But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king's choice food or with the wine which he drank. So he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself. Now, that phrase made up his mind in the original language. It carries a lot of weight to it. It's the idea of laying something down like a foundation, before a single wall goes up, before anything gets built on top, you have to set something solid underneath it. And that's exactly what Daniel did long before the test came. He laid a foundation. And when the pressure hit, he wasn't building the convictions from scratch. He was standing on something that was already there. And that distinction matters more than we give it credit for. Resolve isn't a feeling you work up in a moment. It's a foundation that you lay ahead of time. And most of us honestly have it backwards. We wait until we're standing in the middle of the test, hoping we'll feel strong enough to do the right thing in that moment. But honestly, that's not how it usually works, at least for me. I know if I haven't already decided ahead of time what I'm going to eat, what I'm going to say, what I won't compromise on. The moment almost always wins. Not because I'm weak, because nobody makes their best decisions while they're standing in the heat of the thing when they're tired and being watched. Now, Daniel's food mattered because in Babylon, the king's table had typically been offered first to idols as an act of worship. So eating it wasn't just a dietary choice. It was a statement about who he belonged to. Now, nobody would have blamed Daniel for eating it. He was a teenager. He was a captive. He was alone, thousand miles from anyone who knew him. He could have decided in that moment and nobody would have known the difference. But he didn't.
[00:02:10] He had already decided. He didn't wait till the moment. So today's application, if you're like, well, what does that mean for me? This is the simple application. What needs to move from? I'll figure it out when it happens to I have already decided. Maybe it's how you respond the next time a conversation turns somewhere that it shouldn't. Maybe it's what you'll do the next time you're tired and tempted to cut a corner that nobody would notice. And the reason why this matters so much is that a foundation isn't something that you can lay in a hurry. You don't pour concrete on the same day that the storm hits. You pour it long before, on a clear day when there's no pressure forcing your hand. And that's exactly the invitation in Daniel's story. He wasn't more spiritual than you. He wasn't stronger willed than you. He just did his foundation work early on an ordinary day, before anyone was watching to see if he'd hold.
